Nuclear fuel in a reactor is flushed with a chemically inert gas to remove gaseous fission products, particularly XeSP135/SP. If the fuel is in cans, these are perforated to admit and discharge the gas, but the flushing process is particularly effective with porous moulded elements comprising metallic materials or oxides, nitrides, carbides or silicides of these materials. The gas is preferably light, e.g. helium, neon, argon, to facilitate separation and may be.the heat exchange medium. The fission products may be recovered from a part of the circulating gas, using a gas centrifuge, selective absorption on activated carbon or by gas diffusion. The XeSP135/SP recovered may be available for use.
