The number of turns on the windings in Fig. 2, are such that the amount of current required to magnetize the core Tk fully from - Br in the hysteresis loop of Fig. 1 to +Br shifts the loop of DM only one step, say from - Br to a. The windings D1-Dn are such as to be wholly magnetized when DM makes one step -n steps as the case may be. When impulsing is to start contacts k1 close. A train of impulses then operates contacts k2, k3, k5 an appropriate number of times, relay IR maintaining k4 closed for the duration of the train. At the end of each impulse rectifier LS passes a magnetizing current to the register winding DM which carries the magnetization one step from the zero value - Br, Fig. 1, nearer the value +Br. When the number stored in DM is to be read contacts k6-k8 are closed and reverse current is applied to DM. Demagnetization then occurs, the reverse current being simultaneously applied to reading windings D1-Dn, in parallel. According to the number of impulses registered in DM so an equal number of the cores D1-Dn is saturated. As soon as the core of a reading winding, say D1, is saturated the current through this winding increases sharply so blocking rectifier LH1. A current impulse then flows through the primary of transformer T1 and relay R1 to fire glow discharge tube Gl. The cathode potential of G1 then increases to block rectifier L1. As soon as DM is saturated negatively rectifier LHR is blocked, current flows through transformer TR and tube GR fires. Rectifier LR is thus blocked and current through the unsaturated reading coils is stopped. The number of impulses registered is now represented by the last of the relays R1-Rn, to be operated. The circuit is restored to normal by reversal of contact k9. Modifications. Reading may be effected by saturating the winding DM in a +ve direction, the number of unsaturated read windings then representing the number of registered impulses. The gas tubes G1-Gn, GR may be replaced by transistors.
