Class 100(2) Marking bands 10 (Fig. 8) for hand-stamps are cut from a composite tubular band (Fig. 7) comprising a plurality of individual bands 10. The composite band is made by placing a requisite amount of vulcanizable material, e.g. rubber, in a first mould 15 (Fig. 2), having recessed impressions 16 to produce the desired characters 17 on the bands, locating a mandrel 20 (Fig. 4) surrounded by strip material 22 (Fig. 5) in the mould by means of locating pins 21 and placing a similar mould filled with vulcanizable material on top of the mandrel. One mould is provided with dowels 19 and the other with corresponding holes. The asseambly is then subjected to pressure and, if necessary, heat. After vulcanization the moulds are separated and the strip material 22 together with the vulcanized material bearing the characters 17 removed from the mandrel 20.
