An appliance for taking biopsy specimens from the interior of the colon comprises a hollow head 15 with a small hole 1 in one side through which the mucosa can protrude, whereupon it is cut off by a guillotine knife 2, which is slid upwards by a rod 6 passing through a tubular handle. The upper end of the head is closed by a resilient plug 8 and, in order that the mucosa may be drawn inwards for cutting, the head is partially evacuated by a syringe connected through a pipe 4 to the interior of the tube. In order to ensure effective cutting the knife 2 is held against the side of the head member by a spring- loaded ball 18.
