Classes 142(2) and 142(4) Tuft inserting mechanism for an Axminster loom or for making carpets by cementing tufts to a backing comprises rows of grippers 17, 18 which take tufts from an Axminster-type spool chain at a station 12 and deposits them at a station 13. The grippers are mounted on a carrier 10 which moves bodily upwards, under the action of cams, to enable the top row of grippers to seize the yarns, and moves downwards to draw the required length off the spool (the yarns then being cut) and also to cause the bottom row of grippers to place its yarns in the fabric. The carrier is rotated intermittently to move the grippers from one station to the other by a crank mechanism, the connecting rod of which is actuated by a cam, a second cam mechanism serving to move the crank past its dead centres by acting transversely on the connecting rod. The grippers are opened at the bottom of their travel by means of a cam-operated striker which imparts endwise movement to a rod 43 carrying ramps which rock the jaws 18: the jaws are kept open by a locking plate 52 snapping behind a shoulder on the rod 43. The jaws are closed at the top of their travel by means of another cam-operated striker which disengages the locking plate 52 to allow the rod 43 to return to its original position under the action of a spring.
