898,052. Reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 25, 1959 [Sept. 26, 1958], No. 32651 /59 Class 39(4). A prestressed concrete container for a nuclear reactor comprises a body of concrete containing straight metal cables 12 parallel to the main axis of symmetry of the envelope and straight cables 8 in planes perpendicular to that axis. These steel wire cables pass through sheaths of cement, plastics, steel or other metal and concrete heads 9 are cast on after insertion in the sheaths. The cylindrical reactor compartment 5 is reached by holes 7. Machinery compartments inside the container are kept at a slightly higher pressure than compartment 5. The end closures for the container are concrete blocks with concave outside surfaces. The reactor compartment and machinery compartments have fluid-tight metal linings 11. One end of each cable is held as at 10, and the head at the other end is pulled by jacks and then wedged.
