Class 86 A mixer for powdered or granular material comprises a screw conveyer 4 rotating about a vertical shaft 5 in a container 1 of square or other prismatic cross-section. By reason of the varying distance of the circumference of the screw from the walls of the container, laminar flow and increased mixing action is promoted. The screw 4 may be waisted or diabolo-shaped as shown, or may be cylindrical or tapered. The radius of the worm should be greater than half the least distance from the centre to the wall of the container. The bottom corners of the container may be filled in as indicated to promote flow to the base of the screw.
