A railway wagon for transporting heavy objects, e.g. reels of sheet steel, is provided with a sledge 4, Fig. 3, having pairs of transverse inclined planes 6 between which the reels are received, the sledge also having slides 3 along its sides to engage, with substantial friction, tracks 2 secured to the sides of the wagon chassis 1, whereby the sledge can move longitudinally relatively to the chassis and thus absorb shocks. The tracks 2 are each formed of sections 8 aligned by means of adjustable chocks 9 and have indined sides clad with asbestos 7 engageable by inclined faces 3SP1/SP of the slides 3. Referring to Fig. 4, the heavy object 5a can move relative to the sledge 4 through resilient abutments. The latter each comprise an L-shaped member 12 secured to the sledge and another L-shaped member 13 movable relative to -the member 12 with the interpositioning of resilient blocks 16 whose resilience is regulated by a nut 15 on a bolt 14 secured to the movable member 13. The sledge may be realigned on the chassis by jacks 11 acting between the sledge and toothed racks 10. In another form the tracks each have a single horizontal friction surface.
