A method for darling of mercaptan hold strength hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are sweetened by dissolving oxygen therein and passing through a contact bed of charcoal containing absorbed or adsorbed aqueous caustic alkali. Petroleum hydrocarbons, e.g. gasolines and kerosenes, may be treated. Air may be used as the source of oxygen. The contact bed may be prepared by soaking charcoal in the caustic alkali solution, e.g. 10 per cent w/v aqueous caustic soda for 2 hours, and draining off the excess alkali. A number of beds in series may be used. The feedstock may be passed through the bed at a space velocity up to 20 v/v/hr. Gasolines which have been partly sweetened with caustic alkali solutions with or without solubilizing agents such as cresylic acids, may be treated.
