Glass fibres are sized with a non-inflammable solution containing at least 0.6 parts by weight of vinyltriethoxysilane per 100 parts by weight of solvent and an alkaline material in an amount sufficient to establish a pH of 8 to 11, the solvent being predominantly water in admixture with a water-miscible non-reactive organic solvent for the vinyltriethoxysilane. The organic solvent may be methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, methoxyethanol, ethoxyethanol, acetone or methylethyl-ketone. The alkaline material may be the hydroxide of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium or ammonium, or an amine, e.g. triethanolamine. The vinyltriethoxysilane may hydrolyse, with the replacement of ethoxy groups by hydroxy groups, and the hydrolysed product may condense with itself and with the glass during a subsequent air-drying and heating at 70 DEG C. to 275 DEG C. Laminates may be prepared by placing an excess of a commercial polyester resin between adjacent layers of sized fabric and subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure, during which excess polyester resin is squeezed out and the resin is cured. The fibrous material may be used in the production of laminates with polyester resins, and the alkaline catalyst may be the hydroxide of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium or ammonium, or triethanolamine. The organic solvent may be methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, methoxy- or ethoxyethanol, acetone or methyl ethyl ketone. The vinyltriethoxy silane may be dissolved in the organic solvent and the solution diluted with water. The catalyst may be added before or after dilution.
