A polymer or copolymer is separated in particulate form from a solution of the polymer or copolymer by extruding the solution into a transversely flowing stream of a liquid nonsolvent for the polymer or copolymer to provide a precipitating medium for the polymer or copolymer, the non-solvent being at least partially soluble in the solvent used to prepare the polymer or copolymer solution and the stream of precipitating medium having a velocity sufficient to sever the polymer or copolymer solution into segments, and separating the polymer or copolymer segments from its solvent and from the precipitating medium. The polymer or copolymer may be a polymer or copolymer of acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic acid, sodium, potassium, lithium or ammonium acrylate, vinyl alcohol, vinyl sulphonates, styrene, o-m- or p-methyl styrene, 2, 4-, 2, 5- or 3, 4-dimethyl styrene, an ethyl, propyl or butyl ring-substituted styrene, o-, m- or p-chlorostyrene, 2, 4- or 2, 5-dichlorostyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ethacrylonitrile or alphachloroacrylonitrile, methyl, ethyl or butyl acrylate or methyl or ethyl methacrylate or vinyl chloride, or may be cellulose acetate. Examples refer to the precipitation of copolymers of acrylamide and acrylic acid and of methyl styrene and acrylonitrile and of a mixture of polymethyl styrene and styrenebutadiene synthetic rubber. Solvents and precipitants are selected according to the polymer or copolymer utilized.
