876,301. Furnace electrodes. SIEMENSPLANIAWERKE AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT FUR KOHLE-FABRIKATE. Nov. 6, 1959 [Nov. 7, 1958], No. 37770/59. Class 39(3). A carbon electrode joint includes two carbon electrodes 1, 2, Fig. 5, held in abutment by a double-conical screw threaded nipple 3 in screw threaded engagement with sockets in each of the electrodes, there being spacer means 4 located on, or at the apex of, a flank of the nipple thread, which flank faces away from the abutting faces of the electrodes, the other flank of the said nipple thread being thus forced into abutment with the adjacent flank of the thread in the socket of the electrode. Thus in one form one or more spacer members 4, Fig. 1, in the form of graphite or metal rings are located between the threads of the nipple and socket as shown. In a modification one flank of the thread teeth of the socket is widened so that a particular part of nipple thread is in abutment with both faces of the adjacent socket thread. Alternatively one of the threads of the nipple may be suitably widened. In a further embodiment a spacer 4c, Fig. 4, is cut into the tip portion of the nipple thread. This portion may break off under excessive stresses, but does not cause the electrode to burst and in order to ensure that breakage will occur at a predetermined location the spacer portion 4c may be provided with one or more undercuts 6.
