The invention comprises indolyl -and indenylethyl pyridines namely, 2-(3-indolylethyl)-, 4-(1-indolylethyl)-, 4-(1-methyl-3-indolylethyl)-, 2-(1-methyl - 3 - indolylethyl)-, 4 - (1 - benzyl - 3 - indolylethyl)- and 2- and 4-(1-indenylethyl)-, pyridines. It comprises also, the preparation of the above indolylethyl and indenylethyl pyridine compounds by reacting an indole or indene unsubstituted in at least one of the 1- or 3-positions with substituted or unsubstituted 2- or 4- vinyl pyridine or with 2 : 4-divinyl pyridine at a temperature between room temperature and 200 DEG C. preferably in the presence of an acidic or basic compound as a catalyst, e.g. acetic or hydrochloric acid, a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, piperidine, diethylamine, an inorganic hydroxide, an alkali metal or an alkali metal alkoxide, amide or hydride.
