840,043. Coking processes; materials for making coke; charging coke ovens. ROCHLING'SCHE EISENUND STAHLWERKE G.m.b.H., and STILL, K. F., [trading as STILL, C., [Firm of]. Aug. 13, 1957 [Dec. 8, 1956], No. 25573/57. Classes 51 (2), 55 (1) and 55 (2). Moist, finely ground coal having a maximum granule size of 1 to 3 mm. and a moisture content of less than 11 %, is formed in a briquetting press, Fig. 4, into briquettes having a weight of more than 35 grams and united by a web of at least 2 mm. thickness, to form a string of briquettes which, after emergence from the press, breaks up irregularly, the briquettes and web not breaking up much more before they enter a coke oven. As shown the coal from bunker 1, Fig. 2, traverses a chain conveyer 2, discharge pipe 3 and hopper 4, having a vibration device 6, to the briquetting press 5, which consists of a pair of rollers 20 having mould cavities 21, the shortest distance between the rollers being 10 to 15 mm. The string of coal 22 emerging from the press breaks up irregularly and slides down the shaking conveyer 7 to buckets 8 of a conveyer 9. In a modification a vibrating spiral conveyer replaces the bucket conveyer. The briquettes reach the bunker 10 of a charging car. On charging the coke oven 15, Fig. 3, the closing member 12 is opened whereupon the briquettes pass through a funnel 16, in a jacket 13 surrounding the member 12, and enter the oven 15 through the hole 14. Air and gases evolved during charging pass through the annular passage between funnel 16 and jacket 13 to a pipe 17 leading to the atmosphere. The smallest cross-section 11 of bunker 10 is the same size as, or slightly larger than, the lower aperture in jacket 13 and filler hole 14 and of the same geometrical shape.
