843,667. Holders for note pads and writing instruments. HARNWELL, J. P., and DIXON, T. C. Oct. 22, 1958 [Oct. 22, 1957], No. 32870/57. Classes 16 and 146(1). A holder for a note or scribbling pad and a pencil or pen comprises a base board, clamp means for holding a pad on the base and a device simulating a bird, animal or human figure mounted on the base or on the clamp means and having means for holding a pencil or pen, the or some of the components of the figure being of such resilient construction that the pencil or pen may be used to write upon the pad without detachment from the figure. The base board 10 is of wood, hardboard or plastic and may be roughened or provided with antislipping material on its underside. A pad 11 is gripped by a clamping plate 12 formed of the same material as the base board. A bird-like figure having legs 14 and a neck 16 formed of helically coiled spring wire is mounted on top of the plate 12, the legs 14 being secured adjacent to their lower ends in "feet" 13. The lower ends of the legs 14 pass through holes in the plate 12 and are fastened to the base board by screws 21 so that the plate 12 at one side of a fulcrum 22 secured to the base board is spring- urged downwards to clamp the pad 11 to the base 10. Downward pressure on the plate 12 at the other side of the fulcrum releases the pad. The bird's "head" 17 has a transverse passage in which a pencil 19 is frictionally retained. Owing to the flexibility of the members 14, 16 the pencil 19 can be used for writing on the pad 11 without removing it from the passage in the head 17.
