Classes 23 and 117 A stream of granular material in air is fed at 7 to a centrifugal chamber 1 and passes down the wall thereof to a classifying chamber 2, and on leaving the wall of the latter it is acted upon by an air stream which is fed downwardly through a tube 6 and passes upwardly between an axially adjustable cone 5 and a wall 4. The finer particles are carried upwardly and away with the main air stream and the remainder fall downwardly to an outlet 11. In a modification the granular material leaves the wall of the classifying chamber at a point below the upper edge of the cone. In Fig. 3, the part 102 of the wall of the centrifugal chamber 101 is porous and an air stream passes through it to act upon the downwardly flowing material. Alternatively the porous wall may be located at 121. The pores of the wall may be arranged radially or tangentially in the same direction as the main feed; different sections of the porous wall may be penetrated by air streams of different pressures or at different angles.
