In a gravity davit for launching a lifeboat 8 from a stowed position between decks 4, 6, the davit arm 9 is suspended by means of two pendulums 14, 19 (or sets of two pendulums engaging the arm on either side), the first (14) being shaped as a boomerang and hinged both close to the edge of the upper deck (at 16) and to the arm (at 18) close to the keel of the boat in its inboard position, the second (19) being hinged both to the upper deck (at 20) an appreciable distance inward from said edge and to the arm at a point 21 spaced from the lower hinge 18 of the first pendulum, and the pendulums being so arranged as to cause the arm, when swung outwards, to perform not only a translatory but also a rotary movement.
