[Also in Division B8] A device for dosing liquid reagents in automatic analysers or other intermittently operating chemical apparatus, the dosing of the reagent being controlled by the through-flow of the liquid to be tested, comprises in combination a substantially vertical sample supply tube 4 having a constriction 41 and a generally U-shaped dosing vessel 1 to one arm of which a siphon tube 11 is attached and the upper part of the other arm of said dosing vessel is connected by a substantially U-shaped inlet tube 2 to a constant level reagent supply vessel 3 and the top of this same arm of the dosing vessel is connected to an inverted-U tube 6, the bend 63 of said tube being above the liquid level in vessel 3 and above the inlet 42 of tube 4. Terminal portion 61 of inverted-U tube 6 is connected: to the sample supply tube 4 above, the constriction therein. The sample supply tube and the siphon tube discharge into a common mixing vessel 5. In operation liquid from 3 fills inlet tube 2 and dosing vessel 1, rising in the ascending portion of 1. The reagent in 3 is kept at a constant level lying below that of bend 12 so that no reagent can overflow when the apparatus is at rest. When a liquid sample is added at 42 to tube 4 the liquid rises in portion 61 of inverted-U tube 6, due to constriction 41. The rising liquid displaces air which depresses the liquid level in the right hand side of the dosing vessel 1 and in the inlet portion 22 until the liquid in vessel 1 and tube 2 no longer communicate. As a result the liquid rises in the left arm of 1 and passes the bend 12, the siphon is primed and the contents of dosing vessel 1 are discharged through orifice 13. Meanwhile the liquid sample passes the constriction 1 and flows into vessel 5.
