In a process for the production of cross-linked plastics from isocyanate-modified polyhydroxy compounds and sulphur in the presence of known rubber vulcanization accelerators, there are used saturated isocyanate-modified polyhydroxy compounds which have been obtained by reacting a linear polyhydroxy compound having a molecular weight of higher than 1,000, an alkyl substituted N-di (oxyalkyl) phenyl amine and an amount of a diisocyanate equal to or less than that required for reaction with the total number of reactive hydrogen atoms contained in the other two reactants. Polyesters, polyethers, polythioethers and polyacetals containing hydroxyl groups are examples of suitable compounds of molecular weight above 1,000. Suitable diisocyanates are 4, 41-diphenyl methane-, hexamethylene-, 1, 4-and 1, 5-naphthylene- and hexahydro-p-phenylene diisocyanates. Specified amines are N-di(oxyethyl)- m-toludine, -3, 5-xylidine-2, 6-diethylaniline and -2, 6-dimethyl aniline, and the corresponding di(oxyisopropyl) derivatives. The hydroxy compounds may be reacted together or successively with the polyisocyanate. 2-Merccaptobenzthiazole, 2-mercaptobenzthiazyl disulphide and their zinc chloride addition compounds are suitable accelerators. In Examples (1) a glycol adipic acid polyester is reacted with 4, 41-diphenyl methene diisocyanate and the product is reacted with N-di(oxyethyl)-m-toluidine. The resulting melt is heated on metal plates at 100 DEG C. The material obtained is mixed on rollers with sulphur, mercaptobenzthiazole, 2-mercaptobenzthiazyl disulphide and its zinc chloride complex, carbon black and stearic acid and the mixed is pressed at 150 DEG C.; (2) a 1, 2-propylene glycol-adipic acid polyester and (3) a tetrahydrofuran polymer are reacted similarly.
