The invention comprises bisphenols of formula: FORM:0943920/C2/1 wherein R is a phenyl group substituted in two positions with either fluorine or chlorine and a method of making them by condensing a suitably disubstituted acetophenone with phenol in the presence of HCl and a catalyst such as mercaptopropionic acid. The compounds in which R is 3,4-or 2,5-dichlorophenyl are specified. ALSO: Linear polycarbonate block copolymers are made by first forming a linear polymer from 1,1-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) -1-phenylethane and phosgene, separately forming a linear polymer from a 1,1- bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) -1-dichloro (or difluoro) phenyl, ethane and phosgene and then copolymerizing the two homopolymers.
