855,166. Shearing; shear blades. BURNDY CORPORATION. Aug. 7, 1958 [Aug. 15, 1957], No. 25283/58. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] A tool for cutting a rod-like article without distortion of the surface configuration, e.g. a screw-thread, thereof comprises a base member and a shearing member relatively slidable, each having an opening and the two openings, when in alignment, being adapted to receive the article extending through them and with at least part of the edge of the opening of the shearing member being formed with a wedgeshaped cutting edge. A hand-tool 1 incorporates cutting edges 6, 7 for cutting wire and apertured cutters 8 for cropping threaded bolts and the like. The apertured cutter comprises a shearing member 9, Fig. 4, having an inclined countersunk hole 11 with a cutting edge 12 and a base member 10 with a hole 13 in line with the hole 11. The angle of inclination of the hole 11 is equal to the helix angle of the thread, the plane of inclination of the hole being perpendicular to the direction of relative motion of the members 9 and 10. The member 10 is formed with a recess 14 so that during shearing the wedge-action of the cutting edge 12 tilts the bolt 16 which is held perpendicular to the plane of members 9, 10 in the direction of shearing and the lowermost thread 17 of the bolt freely enters the recess 14 thus preventing damage to the thread form. In a modification, Fig. 5, the shearing edge 21 of the shearing member 9a may be of linear form and is located in a slot 20 in the member.
