[Also in Groups XXVI and XXXII] A fluid-tight joint between hatch cover panels and between the hatch coaming 1 and the hatch cover panel 2 comprises U-shaped housings, e.g. 5 and 17, provided on the coaming and the hatch cover panel, having pneumatic deformable tubular elements 6 and 18, the aperture formed by the housing being closed by deformable elements 9 and 21, provided with heels 31 and secured by metal sections and screws as shown, which on inflation of the tubular elements are brought into contact to form a fluid-tight joint. An anticorrosive lining may be provided inside the housings 5 and 17, and longitudinal ribs 14 may be formed on the deformable element 9. Gutters may be fitted for draining water which has leaked through the joint. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 7 the deformable elements 9 and 21, held by members 27, 28, constituting slideways have larger heels 31 to prevent the adjacent deformable element e.g. 21 from escaping in the event of the collapse of the tubular element 18. The coaming may carry a plate 34 with a member 35 to support the hatch cover panels and may constitute a runway in the case of sliding panels and a cover plate 32 may be fitted to connect the element 4 and the upper edge of the coaming to the ship's deck 33.
