A machine for continuously extruding and cutting confectionary &c. creams comprises a hopper 13 mounted on a frame 1, over an endless conveyer 3, and having a pair of serrated rollers 17 to extrude the material through a die plate 22, a cutter 27 mounted on the frame 1 to reciprocate so that on its cutting stroke it contacts the face of the die plate 22 to sever the extrusion and on its return stroke it travels clear of the die face, means to raise the part of the conveyer 3 juxtaposed to the die plate 22 during the operation of the cutter 27 and to lower that part during the return stroke of the cutter, and actuating mechanism for the machine including an overall speed control, a conveyer speed control and a cutter speed control. The conveyer is actuated through a drive 8, 9 and 10 and a variable speed drive 12 driven from a variable speed motor 11. The motor 11 also drives through a second variable speed drive 39 the cutter 27 and the means to raise part of the conveyer 3. This mechanism, Fig. 9, comprises a cam 36 which raises a frame 41 which lifts a frame 26, on which the cutter 27 is mounted and a pad 51 mounted under the conveyer 3. The cutter 27 is reciprocated by a link 34 eccentrically mounted on the cam 36. The cam mechanism incorporates a clutch to render inoperative the cutter to extrude continuous ropes. The hopper 13 is pivotally mounted on the frame 1, for cleaning purposes and is held in position by a catch 15 engaging a bracket 16, Fig. 2. The cutter 27 may be a blade or a wire.
