[Also in Group XXIII] A tool for lifting and/ or supporting tools or workpieces on presses, punches or similar machine tools comprises at least two co-operating jaws one of which 11 is fixed to a support column 10, the other jaw 12 being slidably mounted for displacement therealong and having a stirrupshaped mounting member including arms 13, 14 in which the column 10 is journalled at two spaced-apart points and means arranged between the arms for raising and lowering the jaw 12. As shown the means for raising and lowering the jaw 12 is a cant ring shifting mechanism of which the hand operating lever 16 abuts on every downward stroke against a stop 17 on the stirrup. A release lever 22 serves for rapid return movement of the jaw 12. The tool shown is used for lifting the tool upper parts on the column guide of a press, punch, &c., each jaw being provided with a recess to receive the column guide. One or both the jaws may be shouldered at the free end to provide for fine adjustment in height. In a modification one of the jaws is arranged rotationally on the supporting column and is provided with a number of different-shaped end faces for selective use. In another modification the lifting mechanism is a rack drive arrangement.
