875,376. Viewing equipment for nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 9, 1959 [April 15, 1958], No. 11928/58. Class 39(4). A television viewing facility permitting inspection of a void 3 beneath the top shielding structure 4 of a reactor comprises a tubular structure 1 which is positioned over an inspection hole 2 and has a turntable 6 (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) from which is suspended a sectional post 5. A forked extension 65 bolted to the lower end of the post 5 has side members 66, 67 to which are pivoted at 73, 82 arms 9, 10 of a parallel linkage 8, the other ends of the arms 9, 10 being connected to a U-shaped member 93 supporting a head 94. A plate 112 rotatable about the axis of the head 94 supports a frame 124 carrying a television camera 7 and a spotlight 127, the camera being movable about the axis of a gear 170. The post 5 is rotatable about its axis by a worm wheel 41 on the turntable 6 engaged by a worm 43 on a shaft 44 rotated by a hand wheel 47. The inclination of the linkage 8 is determined by an electric actuator 85 (Fig. 6, not shown) mounted on the extension 65 and operating on the arm 9. The rotational position of the plate 112 relative to the head 94 is determined by an actuator 114 (Fig. 7, not shown) mounted on the head. The tilting of the camera 7 about the axis of gear 170 together with corresponding tilting of the spotlight 127 about a parallel axis is determined by an actuator 128 (Fig. 8, not shown) fixed to the frame 124. Potentiometers associated with each of the four possible modes of displacement of the camera give indications of the camera position by meters 190.. 193 on a rack 189. A viewing monitor 188 is located on the plate 32 which supports the turntable. The post 5 is built up of tubular units 60 together with the extension 65, the extension and units being lowered, a unit at a time, by a hoist 15 through the turntable 6 which is cylindrical and has movable retaining means for temporarily supporting the extension or a unit whilst the next unit is bolted thereto. When the extension 65 is lowered through the turntable and hole 2 the linkage 8 is in alignment therewith and is subsequently moved out of alignment by the actuator 85. The camera may be gas-cooled and be combined with a gas-operated grab. Drums 19..22 pay out the electric cables and compressed gas line 183.. 186 as the post 5 is lowered, the drums being moved in the reverse direction by spring drums 30.
