A helical-gear cutting-machine comprises play-compensating devices in the gear trains for work rotation and/or tool or work feed, so that the tool may cut in each direction of traverse. The end-milling cutter 5 is screwtraversed by a motor 2 through gearing 4 and a compensating coupling V. The double-helical gear 1 to be cut is rotated through gearing 3 and a similar coupling V. Each coupling V comprises a claw 6SP1/SP on one part of the coupling and abutments 8 adjustable on the other part against a scale 12. Initially, both couplings are made fast and trial traverse and return movements of the tool are made. Whichever train of gears has the least play is adjusted by the coupling V therein so that the play of each train is the same.
