High polymers of olefins of general formula CH2=CHR(R=H or alkyl) or of diolefins having at least one vinyl double bond are prepared by use of a catalyst obtained by reaction of an alkyl or aryl derivative of a bis-cyclopentadienyl complex of a Group IV-VI transition metal and halide of a transition metal of the said groups. Preferably, a dimethyl, diphenyl or ditolyl derivative, a Ti, V or Cr complex and a chloride of Ti, V, Zr, Cr or Mo are used. In examples, polyethylene and polypropylene are produced using a catalyst comprising bis-cyclopentadienyl titanium diphenyl and TiCl4.
