The invention comprises monoazo dyes of formula FORM:0961058/C4-C5/1 wherein the nucleus A is substituted by an alkyl radical having at least 4 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aromatic radical and the nuclei A and B may be substituted by non-ionogenic substituents (i.e. those which do not dissociate in neutral water), R is H or CH3, Hal is a halogen atom and n is 1 or 2. The dyes are prepared by the usual coupling procedure using appropriately substituted phenoxy-amino-benzene diazo components and 1-amino-8-naphthol-3 or 4 : 6-disulphonic acid coupling components. The dyes are used to colour nitrogenous materials such as silk, leather and particularly wool, in red shades. Examples describe the preparation of the dyes and many alternative components are specified.
