1,007,517. Stretching; twisting; shearing. HERM BOCHER G.m.b.H., [trading as HERM BOCHER G.m.b.H. & CO., KOMM.-GES.]. April 9, 1962 [April 10, 1961], No.13649/62. Headings B3E and B3W. Apparatus for stretching and/or twisting rod material includes two clamping devices between which the rod is stretched and/or twisted and a holding device which moves longitudinally between the clamping devices to draw the rod through one clamping device and carry it to the other clamping device prior to the stretching and/or twisting operation. Three rods 10, which may be passed through straightening roller, are passed through lead-in apertures 9a, 9b, 9c and through associated normally stationary clamping devices 1a 1b 1c carried by an adjustable carriage held by pawls 21 engaging a rack 23. The leading ends of the rods 10 are then gripped by holder means 14 on a carriage 13. The carriage 13 is then pulled along rails 11, supported by adjustable carriages 26, by a rope 12 so as to present ends 10SP1/SP of rods 10 projecting from the holder 14 to clamping devices 2a, 2b, 2c mounted in a common stretching head 3. The clamping devices 1a, 1b 1c and 2a, 2b, 2c are then closed on the rods 10 and the holder 14 returned to its starting position. Stretching and/or twisting of the rods 10 is then effected by retracting the head 3 by a piston rod 5 and/or rotating the clamping devices 2a, 2b, 2c. The rods 10 are then cut off by a shearing device 25, near the clamping devices 1a, 1b 1c and the rods are dropped with the aid of rocking levers 45 into a receiving trough 36. The stretched and/or twisted rods are relieved of stress before being unclamped by a small backward movement of the head 3. The holder 14 then draws further lengths of rod 10 through and presents them to the clamping devices 2a, 2b, 2c. Limit switches operate the carriage 13 and lever and cam means open and close the holder 14. The clamping devices 1a, 1b 1c, include wedge jaws, Fig. 6 (not shown) opened and closed by a lever rocked by hydraulic means. The holder 14 includes three pairs of jaws 60a, 60b, 60c, Fig. 8, closed by springs 61 acting through pairs of toggles 62, 63 and opened simultaneously by eccentric discs 64. The twisting heads 2a, 2b, 2c are rotated from a common source by gears 77, Fig. 9, and their clamping jaws 80 are opened and closed by piston rods 81 in cylinders 82. Shearing.-The shearing device 25 is rockable into working position about a pivot 43, Fig. 7, by a hydraulic cylinder 54 and shear blades 57a, 57b, 57c are so disposed on a carrier bar 25SP1/SP actuated by a cylinder 55 that the three rods are cut in succession. Unwinding.-A coil of rod 110, Figs. 12, 13, is supported on each head 118a, 118b, 118c, carried on a pillar 117 on a frame 116 on a carriage 113 and the rods are guided through nozzles 114a, 114b, 114c to the lead-in apertures 9a, 9b, 9c. Spring-urged bars 122 co-operate with flanges 124 on the heads to prevent kinking. After unwinding one set of coils the frame 116 is rotated 180 degrees about a port 115 on the carriage 113 so that coils carried by heads 118aSP1/SP, 118bSP1/SP, 118cSP1/SP on the pillars 117 may be unwound. In another arrangement Fig. 14, coils 110, 110SP1/SP , 110SP11/SP with the end of one coil welded to the beginning of the next are carried along by a conveyer 135 and delivered, with the aid of a tipper 136, on to a head 133 on a triangular drum 131. The drum is then rotated 120 degrees and, with the coil held by retainers 139 rocked out by a toggle 140 moved by a push rod 141 engaging, an eccentric, rod 10 is unwound through a funnel 134.
