An autoclave for growing quartz crystals comprises a steel shell 1 surrounding heating elements 7 spaced from upper insulation 14 and lower insulation 4, 5, 6, the upper and lower sections being separated by an insulating baffle facilitating the attainment of widely different temperatures in said stations. The baffle comprises an annular metal plate 11 and an insulating member 13 enclosing highly refractory material 12. The lower insulation comprises boxes 4 and 5 enclosing refractory material 6. The upper insulation 14 is readily removable by eye bolts 28 and is surmounted by a detachable top box 16 incorporating a cover 18 and surrounded by a metal shield 22. The autoclave rests on an insulating pad 9 and a metal base 10 in a concrete pit 19.
