An arrangement of electrolytic cells for producing aluminium in which the magnetic effects in the crucibles of the cells are substantially eliminated, wherein the cells are arranged in one or more parallel lines through which the current passes in series, has the conductors 3, 3SP1/SP which lead current from one cell to the next, Fig. 7, arranged in a direction parallel to the direction of current flow and in such positions that the horizontal and vertical components Bx, By, Bz of the resulting magnetic fields and their #Bx #By #Bz #SP2/SPBy their derivatives -, -, and - #z #z #z #ZSP2/SP are zero at the centres of the crucibles. The directions x, y, z are indicated in Fig. 1. The cells may be disposed lengthwise or transversely of the line, and the current flows in opposite directions in each pair of lines. Conductors 2 leading to the anode of each cell may receive current directly from the conductor 3, 3SP1/SP or may receive current at each end from the preceding conductor 3, 3SP1/SP by means of a conductor 4 which may be above or below the cell and the conductors 3, 4 may each comprise a layer of multiple conductors.
