A hydrofinishing process for producing lubricating oils having improved colour and oxidation stability comprises treating the oils with hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising the oxides of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum incorporated with a support prepared by calcining a trihydrate alumina, for example hydrargillite, at a temperature in excess of 650 DEG C., but not exceeding 900 DEG C., so that the pore diameter and total pore volume of the alumina are increased.
