At the junction of a face conveyer 18 with a gate conveyer 15 there is mounted, on the framework of the gate conveyer a device for breaking large pieces 19 of coal as they are transferred between the two conveyers, the device comprising an oscillating breaking plate 10 which is mounted on a frame 11 suspended above the gate conveyer framework by resilient supports 14. A motor 13 carried by the frame 11 drives an oscillation generator 12 comprising unbalance weights to cause oscillation of the frame 11. Teeth 17 are provided on the breaking plate 10 to increase the grip between the plate 10 and the coal.
