A magnetic control element comprises a tubular casing 1 subdivided by a wall 6 of magnetic material into two chambers each containing an exciter winding a and b and a control winding c and d, pole pieces 4 and 5 being provided at the ends and a plunger 8 sliding on balls 9 within the assembly. The exciter windings a and b are connected in series and energized by D.C. to provide a resultant flux around the path 1, 5, 8 and 4 whilst the control windings are connected in opposition and energized by D.C. of lower magnitude, thus assisting the exciter flux around one chamber and opposing it around the other, the out-of-balance flux being in the bridge member 6, so that the plunger is attracted to one end by an amount depending on the out of balance flux. To prevent the plunger " locking " A.C. may be superimposed on the exciter current.
