Simulating apparatus for the experimental testing of electrical control systems comprises an assembly of a plurality of identical units each of which comprises an amplifier and circuit elements of adjustable value whereby by insertion of a function plug, the gain and the gain/ time characteristic of each unit may be given a predetermined value. The individual units may each be caused to simulate a predetermined function so that in their combination a clear model of a control system problem may be obtained. Fig. 1 shows one of the units having a plurality of two terminal inputs 1-3 and 4-6 and two terminal outputs O1, 02. The inputs 2, 3, 5, 6 are connected to a symmetrical transistor amplifier in the unit through resistors and may be employed for feeding a number of quantities into the amplifier. Adjustable impedances may be connected between the inputs 1 and 4 and the amplifier. The two double-step switches 7, 8 and 7A, 8A enables the value of amplification and the variation of amplification with time of the unit to be adjusted. A function plug 9 which has formed on its face the image of the transfer function which the unit obtains by insertion of the plug, has the impedances and connecting conductors shown in thick lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Thus as shown in Fig. 2, the amplifier 12 has a negative feed-back circuit comprising adjustable capacitors 13 and 14 and resistors 15 and 16 which are contained in the function plug. The unit of Fig. 1 when the function plug of Fig. 2 is inserted has the characteristic of amplification with effect to time as shown in Fig. 2a. The absolute value of the amplification may be varied by the switches 7, and 8, and of the time function by variation of the switches 7A, 8A. By changing the function plug various characteristics of the unit both of amplification and time can be effected, Figs. 4 to 11 (not shown). Fig. 15 shows an overall system comprising ten units of the type shown in Fig. 1 and two current supply sets. The model units and current supply sets are disposed in three stacked frames 29 on a table 27 which has a drawer 28 to accommodate the function plugs, a highspeed recorder 32 is also mounted on an associated table 31 to record the transfer functions. The high-speed recorder may be replaced by a synchronized oscillograph with a suitable afterglow period. In Fig. 18 (not shown), nine different transfer functions are obtained by assemblies of individual units with predetermined settings of the switches. Fig. 16 shows a block diagram of a Ward-Leonard drive regulated by a magnetic amplifier. The amplifier is provided with a follow-up with characteristic quantities which are to be optimized, the individual transfer function of the elements of the overall assembly with their amplification values and power constants are shown in Fig. 16.
