893,033. Clothes driers. PATENT UND VERWALTUNGS-A.G. May 30, 1960, No. 19114/60. Class 52(5) In a drying rack of the kind having a vertical central stand 1 on which two sleeves O, U are mounted, at least one sleeve being slidable, the sleeves having a plurality of arms radially hinged thereto, the outer end of each arm 2 of one sleeve O being hinged to an intermediate portion 5 of a radial arm 3 of the other sleeve U so that movement of one sleeve towards the other sleeve causes the arms to splay outwardly in umbrella fashion, at least one of the sleeves has a member for locking the sleeve in position on the vertical stand, the locking member being held in locking position by a spring and being releasable by a disengaging member against the action of the spring, the disengaging member or the locking member engaging a cord 33, 41, 56 having a free end, a pulling force applied to the free end of the cord being effective to cause the locking member to be unlocked, and a further pulling force on the free end of the cord being effective to cause movement of the slidable sleeve along the stand 1. Washing lines W are stretched between the struts 3. As shown in Fig. 3 one end of the cord 33 is secured to the slidable sleeve 22 at 34. The cord then passes round a first pulley mounted on the other sleeve or on the stand and then passes round a second pulley 35 mounted on the sleeve 22. The locking member comprises a pawl lever 25 having a nose 27 engageable in one of a plurality of indentations 12 in the stand 1. The disengaging member comprises a lever 29 pivoted at 26 on plates attached to the sleeve 22 and engageable with the pawl lever 25 to move the nose 27 out of engagement with the indentations 12. The lever 29 has a transverse part 32 which guides the draw end 33 and a transverse part 30 which engages behind a stop 31 on the pawl lever 25 and on pivoting releases the latter from the locking position. In a modification shown in Fig. 6 the locking member consists of a roughened eccentric 59 pivoted at 63 on a slidable sleeve 65 and pressed by a spring 62 into gripping engagement with the cord 56 against a second pulley 58. The eccentric member 59 is disengageable from the cord 56 by turning it about the pivot 63. In further modifications the locking member comprises one or two balls or rollers held against the surface of the stand or against one or two projections on the stand by the spring. The disengaging member comprises a lever or a wedge mounted on the slidable sleeve and engageable with the balls or rollers to move them out of engagement with the surface of the stand or projection on the stand.
