897,365. Water-softening. LOOSLI, H. Sept. 4, 1958 [Sept. 4, 1957], -No. 28450/58. Class 46. [Also in Group XVIII]. Deposits from hard water are precipitated in loose form, e.g. as small granules of flakes, and the corrosive action of the water is reduced, by passing the water through a rotating electric field produced by at least three electrodes mounted in a vessel and connected to a multiphase alternating electric potential. Each of the electrodes is subjected to one phase of the multi-phase alternating potential, the number of phases and electrodes being equal. As shown, single-phase alternating current is supplied to the primary winding of a transformer T, the secondary winding of which has three terminals 3, 4, 5. These terminals are connected to electrodes 9, 10, 11, which may be of carbon, silver or nickel, in a vessel 12 through which water flows from an inlet 13 to an outlet 14. A capacitor C in the line from terminal 5 to electrode 11 converts the single-phase current to three-phase. The electrodes 9, 10, 11 are mounted equidistantly from one another and the from the wall of vessel, and the potential between any two of them is substantially the same. A modified apparatus is also described Fig. 2 (not shown), in which the current is derived from a three-phase A.C. mains system and in which the water leaving the vessel containing the electrodes flows through a pipe fitted with a non-return valve to a fire-tube boiler.
