902,035. Knitting. COTTON Ltd., WILLIAM. Oct. 24, 1958 [Nov. 5, 1957], No. 34405/57. Class 74 (2). In a straight-bar machine having two sets of simultaneously-operated needles and means for changing between rib and non-rib work during knitting, the machine needles 2 have associated with them yarn control elements 7 which not only, by means of abutments such as 7A, position new yarn under the beards of the needles 2, to space it clearly from the old loops RLF on those needles, but which also penetrate and spread the last drawn machine needle loops, for these loops to be pierced by empty frame needles 1A, in changing back to non-rib work. The elements 7 may have points 7c slightly offset from, and their abutments 7a set over to, their centre lines and have each a clearance for the associated frame needle head. In the elements of Figs. 17 and 18, abutments are formed by cranked parts which also provide for loop spreading, either without shogging, or with shogging, when a coacting groove 26 is provided in the machine needle to receive the point of the element. Figs. 19 and 20 show forms of yarn control element operating respectively from above and from below the machine needles. Fig. 21 shows yet another form of element. The needles 1A have associated therewith points 5 which not only close the beards of the needles 1A during rib knitting, so that kinks of the newly-fed yarn Y are landed on to those beards and thence on to noses 3A of pairs of sinkers 3, to be taken therefrom by the machine needles 2, but which also, immediately before the change from non-rib to rib work, form a picot course by transferring the last-drawn loops from these needles 1A to the other frame needles 1B. Specification 841,471 is referred to.
