The uniformity and ratio of mixture in a compacted body of two materials having different conducting properties is measured by locating differential transformers at two extremes of the body and adding and subtracting the voltages in the secondary windings. The uniformity and ratio of the mixture 10 of uranium-tetrafluoride and magnesium raspings is determined by placing the mixture between the two parts 11, 12 of a measuring device. These comprise four differential transformers such as DT/Aland DT/A3 equispaced around the top part and another four differential transformers such as DT/B1 and DT/B3 equispaced around the bottom part, the transformers being mounted in insulating material 11, 12. The primary coils of the transformers are fed in parallel from a 2 kc/s. oscillation source while the secondary windings of the upper transformers are connected in one series circuit to a detector and the secondary windings of the lower transformers in another series with a second detector. The outputs of the detectors which are due to eddy currents in the material being tested are subtracted to give an indication of the difference in the mixture at the upper and lower parts of the body and are also added together to give an indication of the ratio of the two constituents of the mixture. It is stated that an automatic feed of the compacted bodies could be provided.
