A device for concentrating impurities introduced by the pouring jet in the head of a ferrous metal ingot comprises two concentric layers A, B which form a system of vertical channels, the layers having different degrees of resistance to destruction by the molten metal. The device may be formed of corrugated cardboard fireproofed with sodium silicate, the layer A being of less resistance by reason of its larger channels. A rebate 6 is thereby formed which is stated to trap the impurities, the effect being assisted by the passage of gases f through the vertical channels. The rebate may be in part preformed, and the layer B may be inside the layer A.
