In a two-slag process for the refining of iron by top-blowing, in which the second slag from one charge is retained for use as the first slag of the succeeding charge, the said slag is rendered inert by addition of a carbon-containing metal additive before the fresh charge is added. The additive may be a reduced iron ore product such as nodules or sponge, or may be metal swarf or finely divided scrap or sheet cuttings; it may amount to 5-25% of the weight of the slag.
