[Also in Division G6] Radiation measuring apparatus for measuring the radiation produced in shielded apparatus which includes a fluid dielectric in which Cherenkov radiation is produced, comprises a light guide extending through the shielding and positioned to transmit light due to the Cherenkov radiation to an external point at which light responsive apparatus is located, the light guide following a curved or zig-zag path to prevent transmission of harmful radiation such as gamma rays. The apparatus may be applied to measuring the power of a nuclear reactor by measuring the intensity of the Cherenkov radiation within it, and may be applied to reactors having light or heavy water moderators or high pressure gas coolants. In Fig. 1, the light guide 2 extends through the biological shield 1 from the moderator to an external photo-cell 4; in a similar arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the light guide passes through the upper cover shield of the reactor. In alternative arrangements, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the light guide is a periscope arranged within the biological shield or passing through the upper cover shield.
