981,643. Power distributing networks. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Dec. 3, 1962 [Dee. 4, 1961], No. 45596/62. Heading H1W. [Also in Division H4] A number of loads, e.g. aerials, are fed in phase quadrature from a pair of inputs operating in antiphase. As shown, the antiphase inputs are provided by an unbalance-to-balance transformer 4 fed by a coaxial line 1, 2. Half the outputs of the balun are fed through paths of equal length (l 1 +#/ 4 ) to loads A 1 , A 2 which thus operate in antiphase. The other halves of the balun outputs are tapped at junctions V 1 , V 2 and fed to a third junction V 3 via two parallel paths 11, 12 and 23, 24 which are respectively one quarter-wavelength (#/4) shorter and one water-wavelength (#/4) longer than the equal paths to the loads A 1 , A 2 , the lengths all being measured from the balun output V, # being referred to the mean frequency of operation. At this frequency, waves arriving at junction V 3 combine in phase. At frequencies slightly removed from the mean frequency, the waves arriving at V 3 have antiphase components, but these components affect only the amplitude of the output from V 3 , this output remaining in phase quadrature relation with the outputs to loads A 1 , A 2 over a band of frequencies. By means of a reversal of connections, two loads A 3 , A 4 may be fed from junction V 3 in antiphase, the four loads A 1 . . . A 4 being then distributed in quadrature. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), a single load is attached to junction V 3 and the fourth output derived from two further parallel paths similar to the paths 11, 12 and 23, 24. These paths are tapped from the junctions between lines 13, 14 and 15, 16 and between lines 9, 10 and 17, 18. Uniform power distribution may be assured by connecting in the lines 7, 8 and 17, 18 quarter-wavelength slotted conductors 7, 17, Fig. 3, coupled to balun transformers 36, 39. The purpose of the latter is to couple reflected components to the dissipative loads 38, 41. A similar purpose may be served by modifying the balun 4 in the manner shown in Fig. 4. The characteristic impedances of the various lines are so chosen that they present matched loads to the junctions.
