A bed-ridden person may be lifted by slings attached to two pulley systems 18 which are independently operable and may be coupled together to work in unison by a clutch 13. As described handles 14, 15, working through reduction gears, operate the two pulley systems, each of which supports two slings from hooks 20 which are attached by cables 19 to winches 12. Locking means enable the slings to be supported in any desired position. The apparatus may be split into two halves which can be used separately.
