Ethyl linoleate is obtained by saponifying poppy seed oil in a solution of 95% alcohol with caustic soda, extracting with petroleum ether and separating the mixed fatty acids with 50% sulphuric acid. The acids are then dissolved in petroleum ether and cooled to -10 DEG C., the precipitants are removed and liquid bromine added to the resulting liquid to obtain tetrabromostearic acid. This is then dissolved in absolute alcohol, treated with zinc powder, refluxed, and then dry hydrogen chloride is bubbled through the decanted liquid to produce ethyl linoleate. The saponification may be at 75 DEG C., the extraction with petroleum ether at room temperature, and kept below 80 DEG C. during addition of sulphuric acid. The bromination may be at 10 DEG C. and the tetrabromostearic acid separated at 5 DEG C.
