934,971. Photographic colour printing exposure control. EASTMAN KODAK CO. March 27, 1962 [March 27, 1961], No. 11695/62. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XX] The invention relates to an exposure control apparatus used in a photographic colour printer and includes an electro-optical transducer 19 of the kind described in Specification 930,610, which receives a portion of the light from the printer negative plane 12 when the plane is illuminated with light containing a predetermined number of spectral regions, and which provides the predetermined number of voltage outputs, the amplitude of each being inversely proportional to the logarithm of the intensity of the received light in a different one of the spectral regions, an exposure computing means for each spectral region each receiving all the said voltage outputs and each providing a voltage output whose amplitude is proportional to the logarithm of the desired exposure time for a printing plane of the printer for one of the spectral regions. A function generator which is initiated at the beginning of each printing cycle provides a voltage whose amplitude at any instant is proportional to the time elapsed from thebeginning of the exposure of the printing plane, and comparators each of which is associated with a spectral region each compare the voltage output from the associated exposure computing means with the voltage output from the function generator, to provide a signal to eliminate light from the appropriate spectral region reaching the printing plane. In the embodiment shown, the colour negative 12 is illuminated by a source 11 which includes three lamps 324, 325, 326 provided with red, green and blue colour filters 330, 331 and 332, respectively, the light from which is mixed by a light integrating bar 337 formed for example by a block of transparent material having highly polished walls. Some of the light from the illuminated negative is directed to the input of the electro-optical transducer 19 which produces three voltage outputs corresponding to the three densities of the spectral regions transmitted by the negative. This colour density information is then fed to a computer and control unit 20, which comprises three exposure computers, three comparators and a function generator 26 preferably of the type described in Specification 932,835 [Group XXXVI], these components operating as previously described. At the termination of the correct exposure period for each spectral region, output signals appear at the appropriate terminal 27, 127 or 227 for the red, green and blue regions respectively, and these signals are fed to " close " terminals 29, 129, 229 of actuators 342, 343, 344 which control shutters 339, 340 or 341 whose function is to cut off the light from each of the three lamps 324, 325 or 326, respectively. A programming circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) contained in the control unit 20 serves to control the printing cycle and initiate the action of the function generator and also controls through terminals 519 and 560 the " open " and " close " action of an actuator 51 which moves a master shutter 50 out of and into the light beam reaching the printing plane 15. An exposure modifying circuit may be provided to modify the printing exposure times computed by the computers, for instance when the density distribution of a negative or the illuminant of the scene depicted by the negative changes from the average. U.S.A. Specification 2,413,706 also is referred to.
