The preparation of galanthamine from the amaryllidaceae and its separation from associated alkaloids

Galanthamine obtained from a member of the Amaryllidaceae is purified by dissolving the impure alkaloid in acetone, treating the solution with aluminium oxide, removing the latter and evaporating the solution to obtain a concentrated solution of purified galanthamine. This may then be treated with an alcoholic solution of hydrogen bromide to obtain galanthamine hydrobromide. The impure galanthamine may be obtained by treating the plant material with ammonia, extracting the alkaloids with a solvent, extracting the resulting solution with sulphuric acid, making the acid extract alkaline with ammonia, and removing the alkaloids other than galanthamine thus precipitated.
