Polyphenyl ethers containing an extreme pressure additive

Lubricating fluids having a pour point below 0‹ F. contain as essential ingredients (a) at least one polyphenyl ether or polyether, and (b) at least one synthetic ester base fluid, each of ingredients (a) and (b) constituting 25-75 weight per cent of the total of (a) and (b). Each of these ingredients are extensively exemplified, the esters including various types of hindered ester, complex esters, diesters of glycols and polyglycols, and diesters of dibasic acids, the latter including fluorine-containing esters such as 1,1-H-perfluoroheptyl sebacate. The fluids may also contain an alkanedionato co-ordination complex of cobalt, optionally together with an aromatic amine or imine containing at least two benzene nuclei, a host of such cobalt compounds, amines, and imines being exemplified. Conventional lubricant additives may also be present, mention being made of alkyl polymethacrylate esters.
