An apparatus for absorbing voltage surges caused by an A.C. fluctuating load such as an arc furnace, comprises a transformer 4, 5, and a saturable reactor coupled to the load so that a voltage surge saturates the reactor, the current flow in which prevents a corresponding surge on the main supply 2.
