Shoes &c. are stiffened by impregnating a porous fabric with uncured synthetic resin, cutting out stiffener inserts, applying a chemical hardener, applying uncured synthetic resin to the portions of the footwear to be stiffened, and thereafter, and before the resin has hardened securing the inserts to the portions to be stiffened and moulding to shape the shoe with the stiffener. The fabric may be hessian and be treated with an aqueous dispersion of urea formaldehyde resin incorporating fillers, e.g. cornflour, woodflour, starch, or maize meal, and a plasticizer e.g. rubber latex. The hardener is preferably a salt of a strong acid and a weak base, e.g. the chloride, sulphate, nitrate, thiocyanate, or oxalate of ammonia.
